HOW WE DID IT
When designing mechanical costume rigs it is really important to establish the visual requirements. It’s also vital to understand the environment they will be used in. Working from the initial storyboard, we knew that the majority of the shots were going to be talking heads, so this meant the mechanical input would have to be operated from below. It also had to be quiet so as not to interfere with the audio.
Whilst it is possible to create a costume rig that is fully motorised, organic movements are far more convincing and adaptable when done with your own fair hands. With a little assistance from post-production, we were able to paint out and mask brake the cables and rods for the wide and action shots. Although this design may seem rudimentary in principle, it was the most appropriate method for the 10 day shoot, resulting in a convincing and reliable effect.
