VEG POWER | eat them to defeat them

The Details

80% of our kids are not eating enough vegetables. Veg Power is on a mission to inspire kids from early years through primary school and into their teens to develop veggie-loving habits they will keep for life, and in turn share with their children.

We made puppets from real vegetables with simple puppetry rigs to give them some personality. We also made special effects rigs for the tomato gore and boiling pan elements.

HOW WE DID IT

The brief was to create as much of the action in-camera as possible, with minimum post clean up. Working from storyboards we offered up possible solutions on how to achieve the desired effects.

We made a biting rig for the carrot and used simple rod puppeteering and fishing line to give the veg some life. We found vegetables that had natural ‘features’ so they looked as realistic as possible.

For the tomatoes, we rigged a large syringe through the table to squirt tomato gore when stabbed with a fork. The peas were on a small lifting platform through the table to make them appear to be climbing over each other.

Our favourite shot is the broccoli leaf reaching over the side of the saucepan, simply achieved with a bit of fishing line!
